The "East-West"
photo series was made during January, 2014. We wished to show the contrast
between two suburbs located at the edge of Nis: Nis Spa in the east, and Milka
Protic district in the west. The distance between them is about 20 km and, in
fact, this very route (after which the series has been named) leads through the
city itself.

At Nis Spa the most common objects are hotels, recreation centers with thermal waters, along with houses surrounded by beautiful gardens and markets. Their counterparts in Milka Protic district are the correctional institution with its annexes and the surrounding social apartment buildings. These objects define and influence the quality of life in those areas.
'Milka Protić' district
In the seventies, this
district was popularly called "Peyton Place", like the TV series.

The Ozren Hotel at Nis Spa and the Deligrad Motel in Milka Protic district are both abandoned. Both buildings are in a state of decay (OR are decaying rapidly), sternly reminding us of the negligence of the authorities responsible for them. Life goes on around them unobstructed, as the people go about their daily activities, looking upon them as relics from the recent past.
